Michael JonesMichael Jones was born and raised in Dallas, Texas, where he attended the famed Booker T. Washington Arts Magnet High School. He moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 1994 where he received his bachelor’s degree in Painting and Sculpture from Atlanta College of Art in 1998. He focused on non-objective, abstract paintings. Ellsworth Kelly, Sol Lewitt, Victor Vasarely, and Frank Stella influenced his work; artists who believed the painting is the subject rather than the subject the painting.

Michael’s current body of work is titled, “The Pavement Series.” “I feel color is one of the most important elements when expressing visual emotions. I try to capture and explore the collective process of my ideas and the effect of my surroundings that trigger emotions, both mentally and physically, which can only be expressed in an abstract form. I place paint on the surface as if I am directing an epic movie, giving instructions to the cast of colors, which possess the qualities to command the audience’s attention and tell the story of the paintings.” In my paintings, I am primarily concerned with urban environments, amplifying and distorting perspective and space. I use the “cast of colors” and shapes that I direct as catalysts for the bouncing energy within each piece. Continuously my series of collaged drawings operate within interior and exterior urban spaces and honor the mundane materials that filter through our day to day lives.
